Could some kind person tell me if I could catch a bus from Manchester To Preston and use my Concessionary bus pass (i.e. free travel).

A direct service involves using National Express coaches (or similar local coaches, perhaps) on which your bus pass is not valid.
To use your pass, you would need to split the journey into smaller parts, each covered by a regular service bus...this would take very much longer - not to mention the inconvenience!

it will take you about 4 hours with one change of bus.

the definition of an "express" service is one which makes stops with gaps of 15 miles or more (eg megabus). if that definition holds, your pass will be valid on Lancashire United's service X41 between Manchester and Blackburn. This would cut the overall journey time to under 3 hours.

Can you still use the pass on the trains in the GM area? You could split the journey between the train to the furthest point of the free area, then either take a bus or pay for the rest of the train journey.
