Cape Verde

I am going to Cape Verde for the first time in February. I have 2 questions:
1. I understand that you need a visa and it is 40 euros per person. Is it best to purchase this in advance or get it at the airport on arrival?
2. Is it best to carry the local currency (escudo) or euros or a mixture of the two?
