I'm going to Chicago early next year and just wondered what American Airlines are like to fly with ? When we We flew to Europe early this year and were crammed into the plane like sardines. I was wondering what sort of legroom and space we will have? I tried booking extra legroom but they were all taken !

I flew to LA with American Airlines and there was more than enough legroom for me (I'm 6' tall) and the service was excellent the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was good too. There was also plenty of elbow room so relax and enjoy your trip x
We flew with them last year to Miami. Very impressed. I even had somewhere to plug my laptop so the journey didn't seem so long. As rebby says there was a lot more leg room. We usually go with Virgin or BA but we would stick with American Airlines now. Have a good trip
yes I agree this is a good airline have been new york with them , and was nice service have also travelled BA and virgin but will go with these again and feel its good to support the american carriers as some going out of business.
American have made a point over the last 5 years or so of having more legroom than other airlines. Unfortunately, they have concluded that customers don't care and would sooner pay less and play sardines, which is a shame. They are now putting the extra rows of seats back in to their planes. I don't know if they have completed this - it would take quite a while - but check with the airline before you book just what the seat pitch (the space from one seat back to the next) is on your flight.
I've done the Heathrow-Chicago run with AA and it was as pleasurable an experience as you could expect from a longish flight. Excellent service, friendly and attentive staff and plenty of legroom. Are you going to be flying with them on domestic flights once you get there? If so, I fear you'll find they leave a little to be desired, but the transatlantic flights (and flights to Hawaii) are very good.
I flew Manchester to Chicago with American Airlines last January and they were very good. The plane was no where near full so had lots of space to stretch out in (one bloke stretched himself out across four seats, strapped himself in and went to sleep). I had a connecting flight in Chicago to Louisville (Kentucky) also with American Airlines, which was great as after clearing immigration and customs just left my case with AA, just past customs and didn't have to lug it around when I changed terminals. I'm flying with Continental to Newark in December, I hope they're as good.

Cheap.

Poor meals, they charge for drinks, no utility pack (face mask/toothbrush etc), brusque staff. They put seatbelt signs on and leave them on for hours.

Book BA.

i'm with Pinotage - i was disappointed by AA. i found their staff inattentive and i didn't like having to pay for drinks.

I think there's a big difference between internal US flights with them and international.

It may also depend on what sort of plane you're on.

This might explain the different views you're getting
