if they can go at last minute, why not check out late deals from the major travel agents and on teletext

In the past we have packed our cases, and THEN gone to the travel agents.
Last time I did it, myself and two of the offspring got a weeks holiday in Rhodes for £89. That was in total, not each!

In addition to the answers already provided, I would suggest they have a look at www.lowcostholidays.com. In fact, one of the major drawbacks with pretty much any provider (internet as well as travel agents, but particularly the internet) is that they want you to pre-determine where and when you want to go. What I sometimes want an answer to is what is the cheapest available - a question they don't really want to hear or at least they are not equipped to answer it. So what you have to do is put in lots of individual places and dates to go with them and then see what is offered - a slow and tedious process.
