My (just turned) 3 year old son has been doing his number two's on the toilet for a couple of months now which is great and much less messy. We just cant seem to crack the number one's! We tried putting him in pants for a day today instead of pull up nappies and by lunch time we had run out of trousers (he refuses to walk around the house without trousers on), even with frequent trips to the toilet. Can anyone provide any tips or advice on what we are doing wrong? TIA
Does he have a dad around that could show him what to do standing up? Then you could get him a step and some of those balls you put down the loo for him to aim at - It may just become a bit more interesting then.
Thanks, oh and thanks for your response to my previous post Boxtops. At this stage he doesn't seem to recognize the anticipation of a wee. My husband tried teaching him to stand up and wee but he didn't quite understand. He is back in nappy pants for now but should I keep taking him to the toilet for a wee? Incidentally, when he sits on the toilet and I ask him to do a wee he does.
Perhaps you should just let him sit and wee for a while then - it's the weeing that counts, not the method! Once he knows when the wee is coming, then getting him to do it standing up can come later - mind you, I did know a bloke once who always weed sitting down, it was certainly a tidier way to do it, perhaps we should encourage more of 'em to do it!
I left training of my kids to a hot summers day when they could be uncovered. They soon understood the concept of discharge and disliked the smell & discomfort.
Have you tried some kind of reward chart? At 3 he is likely to respond to praise and you could get some stickers and stick them up every time he goes on the toilet for a poo and remind him in that he could get another sticker if he does a wee. I would persist with the pants and get rid of the pull ups. If you have only tried him for 1 day in pants its not very long really I would see if there's any improvement doing it for at least 2 days. If he continues to wet himself every single time after that then he is clearly not ready and I would put him back in nappies and forget it completely for a few weeks then try again.
