In general - no, you can't print your own tickets - far too open to fraud. What's to stop you printing off multiple copies and using them on different trains?
A few train companies do have web specials that you can print out - but only for certain journeys on trains they operate themselves
Chiltern, Cross Country and Virgin are the ones I can immediately think of.
Oh and megatrain - but you don't actually need a ticket, just a reference

it would be useful our local station has gone computerised so to buy a ticket you have to use the computerised system ok if your computer minded but for my 85yrold mum who goes to visit her brother 60miles away by train no good she cant work the machine and now has to get on aatrain and wait for the guard to come round so she can buy a ticket from him.If they got funny with her i would be on to them straight away.
Because a coach ticket is normally valid for a specific coach and the driver has a list of who is travelling.
Rail tickets in general are valid by any train, subject to off peak restrictions if applicable - it is not possible for every ticket checker to have a list of who MIGHT be travelling on his train and even less possible to know who has already travelled on another train
Print you own ticket (for advance train specific tickets only) is expanding - I've found another one http://gr8traintickets.co.uk/
