Weekend away for the Husbands Birthday - ideas?

I am looking to arrange a surprise city break for my Husbands bday in November - I have been looking at hotel chains such as Hotel du Vin & Malmaison.
Are there any other hotels of this standard what anyone can recommend?

As far as where - thinking somewhere like London, Bham, Leeds, Liverpool.
Somewhere we can mooch about during the day and go out at night......?

The Malmaison in Bham is ideally placed for shops, theatres, restaurants and is very good. Also if you like the Beatles there is a fab hotel in Liverpool called A Hard Days Night, right in the middle of the city again ideally placed and around the corner from the Cavern, hope this helps

Malmaison Oxford is like an old prison, which makes for a different and interesting stay (although if you book, please double check your room booking, I thought I had booked a prison cell but had booked in the cell block which was just a standard room ) and there is plenty to do in Oxford. I would also recommend Windsor, the restaurants here were excellent and I stayed in a stunning spa hotel just outside the city.
