I know an old chap in his 80s who lost his wife. He never learned to cook. Apparently in olden times the wife was expected to do all the cooking and the husband just went out to work and did nothing around the house. What a quaint notion. However, he's come unstuck now, since he just lives off those pre-prepared TV microwaves style meals.
He's got plenty of money so he could easily afford to have someone go in and cook his meals for him. He's never thought of that so I wondered if anyone knows if such a service exists and could recommend any that are trustworthy?

why doesnt he try a local college eg East Berks College of Agricultre used to do a man in the kitchen course for men in his situation _ I would have gone home with any of them for the twice baked goats cheese souffle ! Seriously it would help him to meet other men in the same situation too

Learning to cook is obviously the best solution and he might like to try these as well.

My father had to learn to cook at the age of 80 when my mother was taken ill. He had already been familiar with a slow-pot, to cook his breakfast porridge, so I told him to use this and put four items ( chops, chicken legs, pieces of braising steak, etc ) in first thing in the morning, with a tinful of soup or tomatoes, or tinned wine sauce, and let it all simmer for hours. He was to take the first lot out for lunch, and the second lot out for the evening meal. This appealed to him as both easy and tasty, so he readily agreed to try it.
After a week or so, however, he rang me to say that while the evening meals were delicious, the lunches were disappointing. I thought for a bit, then asked - had he thought to defrost the meat before he started ? Alas, it had not occurred to me that he might need an explanation about defrosting frozen meat !!!
