Where to go in Yorkshire

Hi - I would love some advice where to go in Yorkshire. We live in Leicestershire and have only been once to Yorks and stayed near Hawes Wensleydale (loved it) but thought this time we may try staying near Holmfirth. OH loves "Last of the Summer Wine" - is this where all the filming took place or is it filmed all over Yorkshire? We love picturesque little villages with streams running through, little bridges and pretty country lanes as we are keen photographers. I'm not at all keen on the moors (sorry if you are, but i find them a bit bleak) We will be taking our touring caravan, looking mainly for adult only caravan parks, but not so bothered about that now as the children are back at school. Any advice would be most welcome please!

All of the location filming for Last of the Summer Wine was done in and around Holmfirth.

If you're in that area, make sure that you visit the lovely Piece Hall in Halifax. (It's a beautiful historic building, with some lovely shops):

Denby Dale and its surrounding villages (Shelly, Shepley and Emley) are likely to appeal to you.

I live just over the border in Saddleworth which was once part of yorkshire, and there are indeed many bonny villages in the area,I believe L O T S W was filmed in the Holmfirth Marsden area. I am not clued up on caravan sites but my mate swears by the caravan club book.

Thank you both - bless you, how very helpful. I have looked many places in Yorks up on the net before but its always better to get advice from people who actually know the area. We are in the Caravan Club so will see how far these places mentioned are from the nearest sites........

the area around Thirsk is good, nice walks not far, close to sutton bank, not a bad drive to the hole of horcumbe, and thornton le dale Dalby forest isn't that far either Had a few good breaks in the area

if you are into photography you would love whitby and robin hood bay and i think it is called staithes

it is a few years since i have been but they used to have caravan parking up the lane behind the abbey in whitby

we found a place called Osmotherly, North Yorkshire, very beautiful countryside, and lots of surrounding walks, great views, and not too distant to the Lake District.

the plus side of whitby is that you are near to aidensfield (heartbeat tv)

I like going to Bolton Abbey when we visit Yorkshire. Lovely views, river going through and you will find plenty of things to photograph. I have put on a link below in case you fancy a look. It is also close to Skipton where you could go on a canal boat to spend an hour or 2. There are also lots of small villages to look around in that area.

If you end up anywhere Masham or Leyburn the "Forbidden Corner" is well worth a visit. It really is a magical place (especially when the kids are back at school).

If you do go to the Forbidden Corner, it's important to book in advance as they are timed tickets.
This is to allow the racehorses access onto the training runs on the moors at Middleham. Yo can book by 'phone, on the net or in Middleham itself.

have you considered lancashire?
we went to clitheroe with our van. it is a beautiful place. gorgous scenery. there are sculpture walks, museum, castle, beautiful parks around the castle. Just outside is waddington, a stunning little village with 2 pubs, a cafe, a post office and the most photographed bridge in lancs.
some great walks too. (and fab shops)

and you've got the forest of bowland, lancaster castle, and are an hour away from the lakes!

If you find Holmfirth 'orrible I would take Dr filths advice and head up to Whitby it's a great part of the country, all the way from Bridlington up, fantastic scenery and great people whether you stick to the coast or head in land over the moors
