I always forget - is it OK to pack aerosols (hair spray etc) in your luggage?

Chris, the question was - can aerosols go in the hold/hand luggage? (the point being the aerosol part of it) The answer being yes. Aerosols don`t blow up in aircraft holds but if they move around in someone`s washbag (for example) and the button gets depressed, they could leak. Same with any liquid in the hold. Further to Spotit3 and Bobbisox's posts, liquids are permitted in hold luggage but it's often considered wisest not to put aerosols into your suitcases. That's because the lower atmospheric pressure in the hold at altitude increases the pressure difference between the inside and the outside of the can, meaning that there's a possibility of the can rupturing and depositing its contents into your suitcase.
Unless 237SJ has extremely small cans of hairspray, she is acting illegally and can expect some severe delays (and the confiscation of her hairspray) when she attempts to pass through security checks. Apart from baby foods and liquids required for immediate medical needs, no liquids can be taken into the cabin of any aircraft flying out of any EU airport unless they're in quantities not exceeding 100ml:

The only exception would be if the liquids were purchased after passing through the security check.

Or to be more specific and a pedant:-
Permitted in or as carry-on baggage/Permitted in or as checked baggage/Permitted on one`s person - Non-radioactive medicinal or toilet articles (including aerosols) such as hair sprays, perfumes, colognes and medicines containing alcohol. Total net quantity of all above mentioned articles must not exceed 2kg or 2L. Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of contents.

Aircraft holds are not routinely pressurised. It costs money to run the pressurisation system, which airlines don't like spending. (Animals are transported in pressurised and heated holds).
The EU-wide rules on liquids in aircraft cabins over-ride the rules of individual airlines (which are based upon IATA protocols).
I accept that 75ml is within the EU rules but the 2Kg/2 litre rule is over-ridden by the rule which states "containers must be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm".

The liquid policy is a separate issue restricting what can be carried through security. But yes, you can pack a hairspray etc in the hold and you can buy an aerosol hairspray and put it in your hand luggage. It is perfectly safe.
