I'm planning a trip to the States next year.As of yet i haven't made up my mind where abouts i'm going to go.I was thinking of spending a few days in one state  & few days in another state. Is it any cheaper if i book my accomodation directly through a hotel & just get a flight only?.

If you don't know wher you're going, then how can you book a hotel now?

There's plenty of hotels and they have their prices displayed on huge boards outside, so you can drive around til you see one you fancy. Otherwise book on the web while you're there.

sometimes it is cheaper to book directly with the hotel but sometimes expedia can be cheaper as they have offers and things, so its worth comparing the price on the hotel website and the price on expedia, or another website like that if its not on expedia.

Pinotage i didn't say anything about booking the Hotel now.It was just a general question i was asking.
It depends I would think, why don't do go to the library/buy a travel guide to the US, or preferably the states you would like to go to, surely there must be some information in those
I was in the US last year. I turned up in LA with no accommodation booked.  Offically you are meant to have somewhere to stay when you enter - not sure if this is true for all US states or just california -, but I had a copy of Lonley Planet so wrote down the name of a hotel I found in there when going through customs.  I travelled from LA to Vegas and through the surrounding states booking hotels on arrival, or online a couple of days before.  Greyhound buses are really cheap, as is car hire. I flew to NY.  I would suggest booking a hotel in NY to get a good deal, but this could be done online from the states.
gerry, just seen your post.  I booked through Expedia and am doing 9 flights in 14 days.  Travelling Gatwick to Atlanta, Atlanta to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to Grand Canyon and return to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to San Diego, San Diego to San Francisco, San Francisco to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to Atlanta and Atlanta to Gatwick.  Booked one or two nights accommodation at each place and saved myself a fortune doing it myself.  Hope this helps.
