We've found best currency, in order of preference by locals is US dollars, followed by UK pounds, followed by Egyptian pounds.
One word of warning - take plenty of low denomination notes - the locals often "forget" to give you change or shortchange you.
I always take english money and change it into Egyptian over there - you get a better rate than you would here. Pay for everything in Egyptian (apart from any diving extras if you are using a dive school - they will only take Euros, dollars or credit cards)
Take some UK coins with you to tip the bagage porters at the airport, and make sure you have the right money for the visa at the airport - it was about 17 when I was there last year, and they will only take pounds, euros or dollars for that.
There are cash machines in Naama Bay & Old Market. I had no problem taking GBP. You get a much better exchange rate in Egypt than at home.
I was there in Jan06, bought 2 properties as seemed like a good idea, as realtively cheap & are to stop developing end 2007.
Have a great time, & you dont need to buy a visa unless you are travelling outside Sharm :)
