I'm doing that in January, touch wood. In the past I've stayed at Key Largo and Islamorada - nothing special, just motels. There also aren't any unmissable sghts on the way, though I found the Turtle Hospital fascinating

It's just a nice drive. And Key West is different from most US towns, nearer Havana than Miami, very laid back.
