My parents (aged 83 and 87) are trying to get insurance cover for a 6 weeks trip to Malta. So far the best premium they have been quoted is £870 (!). They are both in good health, have the type of medications one would associate with their age (gout, cholestrol for dad, hypertension for mum) - dad had three heart attacks 23 years ago, mum is 6 years in remission from breast cancer. I know they are 'high risk' but this premium is stopping them taking a trip to the sun that will be really beneficial. Most insurers won't even cover anyone over 80, let alone for more than 4 weeks - has anyone any experience in this field please?
No personal experience but Which magazine recently recommended trying these for those aged 80+. These were for annual European cover, which as they are going for six weeks might work out cheaper.
My father travelled at the age of over 90 to the USA without insurance, because of the costs you mention. I warned him that I was not prepared to fly out and fetch his body back, but that I'd get the British Consul to cremate him and send the ashes back. Didn't make any difference, and he did actually get back safely.
My parents used Allclear travel insurance they specialise in travel insurance for the older person. Was £100s cheaper than they could get elsewhere. Worth a look.
Hi boxtops, I have started getting letters through from Saga and on every occasion so far they are a lot more expensive than my usual insurances. Always worth a look though. You may get a cheaper quote.
