I don't see why people need them these days - if you are on a tour you might put a tour label on, but I don't like telling people either where I'm going, or where I'm going home to (so the house is empty at the moment).
TOH, I wouldn't do the passport thing- it means if someone did nick your suitcase, they've got your passport details too. We carry a copy of the passport in case of loss, but always in hand luggage so it doesn't leave our side. We always take a list of our credit/debit card emergency numbers too - having been robbed of my purse in Spain once, that proved very useful.
if i label my suitcase i only write my postcode and name on it.
for those who take copies of passports, why not email them to yourself. That way you can access them if you need to but with no worries about your copies being at risk in hand luggage? I also email my esta details and insurance details to myself too.

I also do similar to boxtops. I put a A4 piece of paper in suitcase on top of clothes with the hotel name, address and phone number on the way out and change it to my address etc for coming back. For a name on the outside of the case I put on one of those straps with my surname on so I can spot it easily amoungst all the other luggage.
