sengas I know exactly how you feel, and I'm an example of what happens to diabetics when they DON'T take care of themselves. I spend a great deal of my life in hospital waiting rooms to see specialists with diabetes, renal clinic (because my kidneys don't work properly any more) , eye department, and have had one cataract removed at about 46 (I'm 52 now) and am...

Ok number one a sensible diet that will control your diabetes will help you shift some weight...
It will be a bit harder.... Next... walk a bit more every day weather permitting helps your mood and burn off a few more calories
And ask for help with the menopause symptoms there are specialist menopause clinics if your GP isn't that interested
I'm 55 asthmatic, 8 stone overweight approx, I have arthritis...and back problems from when I was nursing... and some mornings it takes a soak in the bath before I can bend down to put my tights on for work... and then I go out birdwatching or finish a painting and think ok on balance lifes still pretty good..
Seriously the menopause is probably a bigger problem than you think it can make you feel cr@p ruining your sleep, hot flushes making you feel sweaty, tired and smelly but it passes I am out the other side and its all an unpleasant memory...

I think most older folk will know what you mean. One reaches a peak and then problems such as health problems seem to come along. But it is just a case of accepting and learning to take it in your stride.
If all seems overwhelming, pick the thing of most concern and concentrate on trying to alleviate or even fix it first. If you try to look at all your issues in one go it is easy to feel overwhelmed and end up not tackling anything. Take things a step at a time until they seem minor compared to what you can get out of life.

i am sure there are plenty of people, myself included who can empathise, sympathise with you. One thing about being overweight is it affects everything you do, not just getting breathless, or not being able to walk too far, but brings on a catalogue of problems, and if left untreated can be debilitating and life threatening. Having said all that, there is much you can do, i am not talking out of turn, been in this situation so first stop the doctors, ask them if they have a dietician attached to the surgery, if not then they may have other avenues they can suggest, but it's up to you to press the point. Managing the diabetes is another, with a better diet, more fresh fruit, veg, cut down on caffeine, booze if you drink, at least you stopped smoking, that was probably quite hard, so well done. I am no doctor, but have been, and to some extent in your shoes. 58 is not old, you will only be so if you think it. Change of diet, and lifestyle does work, new hairdo, even new clothes once you have shed some of the weight can all give you a much needed lift. This time of the year is the worse if you feel low, but i would say see the doctor first, ask about the diet and any help they can provide.

I spend a great deal of my life in hospital waiting rooms to see specialists with diabetes, renal clinic (because my kidneys don't work properly any more) , eye department, and have had one cataract removed at about 46 (I'm 52 now) and am getting one forming in the other eye now; I've had 5 laser treatments on the back of my eyes to stop the small blood vessels that have formed there, bleeding. I've spent a great deal of time at my dentist - although this may actually not be directly due to the diabetes but hasn't helped, I have trouble with the heat sensors in my feet and take 6 pills and an insulin injection twice a day - YOU DO NOT WANT TO END UP WITH ALL THESE PROBLEMS, so start to think about diet, exercise and take care of your body, especially feet and toes. I'm sorry to hear about the continuing menapause which must be a real nuisance for you, but please talk to your doctor, or diabetic clinic about your problems, and take their advice. Oh, and you get thrush very easily as well.
(and incidentally going onto insulin jabs allows you to put on weight very easily, so that's another reason not to let the diabetes get out of control.) Sorry for the rant, but if I can save one person going through what I have had done, it will be worth it.

Hi Sengas. Welcome to the club. I am 69 and my last six years have been a progression of worsening health. I have a dodgy heart my kidneys are not working correctly but worst of all I have emphysema which means I cant even walk.Sadly I still have all my senses and I can see the total lack of interest my doctors have because they look at me and because I am a national health patient
my normal medical advice is " keep taking the tablets and come back in six months."
