Taking the train across the USA

Has anyone had experience of taking the Amtrak Zephyr train across America? What time of year would be a good time to do it? We are going to San Francisco next Christmas and thought about doing this mid-December to arrive in SF a few days before Christmas, but are uncertain about the weather also what we would see at that time of year.

I'm planning to do this later this year - go to great rail journeys on the web - they do a tour of 21 days from New York to San Francisco by train with tours and stops in between - prev travellers have given good reviews and they are ABTA registered
