acer travelmate laptop power problem

My acer travelmate 2700 laptop will only run off the battery. However the battery will only charge when the lid is DOWN!! So with the power plugged in and the lid down the battery charges. When the lid is raised and the laptop turned on the charging light goes out and the laptop will only run from the battery!! If I take the battery out the laptop will not run off the mains!! Any ideas please?
