Seeing the sites of......

Life ticks by too damn quickly at times, and before we know it, we are left wondering where it all went, what did we do etc. So, I have decided before I am too old or incapable, or without the funds to do such things, to indulge myself by visiting a few places I have always anted to go to. (I love ancient and medieval structures/civilizations).
My question is.... Where is it that you have always wanted to go/see, whether at home or away?

you are so right to "do it while you can",sadly I cant do long haul travel anymore but I did manage to get to see most places I wanted to. Never been down the Nile or up to the arctic circle (except by armchair) so it would be both of those.

I have been fortunate enough to visit most places on my tick list. I still want to go to Western Canada and 'do' the Rockies train journey. I would also love to revisit Japan

Taj Mahal, even though it's said by some to be disappointing. Frankly, most places don't compare well with their reputation; only big exception for me was the Grand Canyon, because no picture or account prepares visitors for how vast it is.

the Taj Mahal is bigger than you'd expect and (to me) not in the least disappointing. Some people find it too cool and staid, but it's a tomb.

Wonderful idea Papa_Paul - I hope you get to go everywhere on your list. I'd like to travel round India for a month or so, and see all the places Michael Palin went to.

I'd love to see Japan, not just Tokyo, the temples and wooden buildings.
And properly see Bali, as only managed a day and a half on a stopover en route home from Oz.

At the top of my wish list is the Taj Mahal but I'd love to sail the fjords in Norway, go back to Australia, visit New Zealand and oh, a great dream would be to go to Antartica but that's just a dream...

Why is it just a dream coccinelle?
The Taj Mahal is on my "to do" list, and the temples in Japan I would love to see too BIGJACK, also those in Vietnam along with Angkor Wat in Cambodia too. Not sure I will ever get there, or have the funds, but it's on list of things to do before I die

That is the one thing that was holding me back. I have been divorced for 12 years, no kids, and always hoping to meet the right someone to share these experiences with. I could have done these things years ago, but waited, and here I am, still haven't gone there yet, and still alone. Sod it I thought, I booked Venice in August, Athens in October and Luxor in April 2013, and will be going somewhere else later in that year. Bit nervous about being alone, but not overly bothered. Grab the bull by the horns and go for it if you can. Well, except maybe the Antarctic one, then grab a hot water bottle by the spout!!!

Although I prefer traveling with someone, particularly when its dinner time as you tend to go out at night and do more, but I too have not had someone to travel with most of the time. I do however, just go, as I want to see things and experience things and can not wait for someone else to decide they have the same interests. I say JUST GO and enjoy.

Well, I lost my husband in 2010 and we loved travelling. I've already experienced that 'being on my own in a hotel room' which is quite strange but was visiting with sis and BIL.
sitges, that's one of the things I'd dread is the night-time and sitting down to dinner on my own. No-one to share your day with and go over the experience... so putting things off ...

Travelling alone is quite easy to adjust to; I've done it for years, for the same reason as yours; though it may seem daunting in prospect. There are some selfish pluses; you are sole judge and sole person in charge, you haven't to consider anyone else, can go anywhere on a whim, without having to think of family needs or timing or their baggage or tickets or anything else.. If you are not used to it, then eating alone may feel strange . You need books to read, in the absence of anyone to converse with.

Heck, the explorers never took their wives! LOL

Would love to go to the Antarctic, but its just so expensive.
However, will be seeing the Taj Mahal in October :)

Leptis will knock you sideways. If you can get there. Ancient and huge ruins of the Roman city in Libya. Called Leptis, Lepcis or Leptis Magna. Standing in that Forum, walking in the footsteps of emperors - huge thrill.
Albania next, then Rome itself.
