My PC was infected by a trojan horse and something called Security Shield kept popping up on my screen telling me that I had to pay $79.99 to get rid of it. Good job I didn't agree to it as my brother, who came round earlier, said that this security shield was the trojan horse itself and if I had paid with my credit card and loaded it up I would have become a victim of fraud and my PC may have died!

I hadn't been able get online since last night as this virus thing wouldn't let me access the internet. Virgin Media Security doesn't seem to be doing its job properly so my brother has added microsoft security essentials which appears to have got rid of this virus. Is there anything else I need for added protection?

I can't speak for any other systems, but we've got Norton and it does its job (fingers crossed).

I had Norton several years ago Box but I found it very restrictive at the time. Maybe its changed now. I'll look into it. Thank you :o)

Thanks ZebUK, I'll look into Malwarebytes as well. Can you have more than 1 or 2 of these at the same time? When I tried to add Virgin Media Security I was required to remove AVG which I had around 6 years ago.
i had the same problem couple of days ago. i couldnt get rid of that security shield, then i uninstalled my curent microsoft windows security and downloaded avg security, 1 month trial free by the way :)) it has more features than the basic free avg security.
then scanned whole computer and succesfully removed 5 trojan horses. it took me 3 hours to get rid of them but after my internet works fine.
maybe you could also download avg security, good luck.
I also had this problem saturday and sunday night Chris told me to run malwarebytes in safe mode been fine since. Fingers crossed.
I use Avira which is free and very good. Avast is also free and very good.

I've used AVG and Avast before but I thought that as I have Virgin Boradband I'll use their security program as well. Looks like I'll have to got back to one of the ones I was using before. I think I got rid of AVG after a year when they wanted me to pay after that.

Looks like there is a pattern emerging here. I'm sure I must have acquired the trojan after clicking on a link on a post on AB.
That's what I think tiggerblue as both nights I was on AB when it flashed up. I had been on computer awhile before that

Makes you feel like you don't want to click on any links anyone posts.
Bullguard is my system and seem to work well.........

There's quite a lot of internet security systems around. I'll have a look at all that have been suggested.

Thank you all :o)
Whatever you do, avoid having more than one Virus Protection Programme installed in your computer....They'll conflict with each other and cause problems. I am not a techie, so read what our AB experts have said.:-

This tells you how to remove it... https://community.mcafee.com/thread/43791
The security shield problem has been discussed here. http://www.theanswerb.../Question1144153.html

To remove the security shield, you can refer to following steps:

You can download security-shield-killer:http://www.anvisoft.co
m/wiki/security-shield-virus-removal.html
to remove it directly or you can follow alternative way to remove it.

Alternative way to remove security shield:

Step1, Stop its fake alert by activating the fake program with the debugged code, 64C665BE-4DE7-423B-A6B6-BC0172B25DF2;

Step2, Run a full scan with your anti-virus program; If your anti-virus program can't detect the Security Shield virus, I suggest you download Anvi Smart Defender to kill it;

Step3, Restart your computer to completely remove Security Shield virus.

I didn't see that post Samuel until Futritcat mentioned that they'd also had problems.

Thanks once again all :o)
Pay that bit more for Norton.
Security Shield is a wide-spread malware.
Have you managed to remove it successfully?
Question Author
My brother managed to remove it using Microsoft Security Essentials, Samuel. Seems to have done the trick.
