Bought a prepacked sandwich for lunch today , because am not able to go home for one. Chose chicken and pork with salad.Read the box said produced in the UK.
So thought that should be OK.
Had the sandwich which was pretty tasteless, was about to put the box in the bin when I saw the ingredients listed on the bottom.
The chicken was from Brazil, the pork from within the EU,the salad filling from France-- all assembled in Leeds.
How many air miles did that lot clock up I wonder?

Blimey....should have read ..well travelled filling, tasteless !!
So pigs do fly and chickens come home to roost. :)
You think that's bad. I read recently that smoked salmon from Norway is first frozen, then shipped to Amsterdam-from where it travels to China to be de-boned,trimmed and then packaged for sale here. It is then re-frozen,put back on a cargo ship -to arrive back in Europe several months later.

I wonder how far Scottish salmon travels?
Meat can be labled as' Produced in UK ' if it is really imported and just cut up or packed in the UK. Over 90% of all chicken for prepared products , pies, prepacked portions or slices, curry , tinned& frozen products, Kievs ec is flown in from Brazil and processed here so it can be sold as 'UK Produced'
So glad I don't buy any prepared stuff *shudder*.
You should read the book 'not on the label'

Eye opening...
I guess it might have been tasteless due to jet lag ;)

Thanks everyone, have learned much from your answers, and had quite a chuckle as well.Brenda.
Never mind the air miles on what date did they fly?
When on a contract for a spectacle company, the parts for the glasses went from Lutterworth to various parts of Italy six - yes six times - before they were put up for sale, i.e take wire to Italy for coating, then return, check coating in UK, then back to Italy to bend ear piece, return to UK, check angle of bend, return to Italy to put on plastic trim on ear pieces, back to UK, back to Italy for nose pads, checked in UK, back to Italy for final sizing, check in UK, then finally return to Italy for installation of lenses, and at last deliver to distribution centre.

Then we wonder why glasses in this country are sooo extortionately priced..?
