How much do you tip a hairdresser?

I was chatting about this with a friend. Her hair appointment cost £80 and she left a tip of £5. I thought that seemed fine, but I know it's suggested that the tip is 10% and there's also the shampoo lady of course. But in these hard pressed times when many of us can barely afford to pay for groceries let alone hair appointments, I just wondered how much you all tip your hairdressers?

I don't pay £80 for my hair appointmnet as I don't have any colour but I pay £20 - £25 for a cut and blow dry and give 10%.

In these times when people can hardly afford hair cuts, they can use a mobile hairdresser and pay much less than me but I think 10% is still expected. Many people get together and share one mobile hair visit, she does 4/5 in one session which is much more economical alround.

i usually just give the change if any or a pound, for cut n shampoo.

i serve people all day and never get tips in a shop why expect them in hairdressers.

i always give my barber £1 which when you work the ratio out is much less but then I am on a fixed income now.

Irrespective of my having a cut or a cut and colour I leave £5 -£10 depending on what cashI have in my purse. I have my hair done by the Director of Style or whatever stupid term they use. As she is the most expensive one in the salon I expect the tip to go to the hair-washer and sweeper-upper.

I always put £1 in the tin for the shampoo girls. The owner cuts my hair so I don't tip her.

I usually do the same as bizzy lizzy, £5 for £80 hairdo, and £3 to the shampooist, who is usually a junior and doesn't earn much.

Mine comes to the house so I don't tip her, it's my shampoo, conditioner, water etc, so the money is all hers.

My last trim cost £33 so I gave her £40. I should have given her a slap!

I am getting my hair cut by son in laws sister next week, never had it done by her before, she owns the salon, should I tip, normally about a fiver and a couple of quid for the shampoo girl.

£80 for a hair cut! Wow, that sounds a lot to me. If you are Scottish you are probably not used to tipping anything but have heard time and time again that 10% is about right.

Have we got any Americans here to back us up on this point?

I AM a hairdresser.... frightening prices you guys pay...we charge £19.50 for a cut and blow... £47 for a top notch perm.. that includes the cut and blow dry/set... £40 for high-lights.. etc... £9.00 for a dry cut... most of my clients tip... on average between £1 and £5 pounds..... trained for 3 years.. an in salon apprecticeship..when I was 16... I'm nearly 42 now..and I'm on minimum wage..as most stylists are...I really appreciate any tips I get... a lady the other day gave me 20p.. that was all she could afford... that was ok... she liked her hair... ..tipped me what she could.. we both went home happy!! I pay around £35 for mine but have been too several around town and no one does it as good, so would rather pay more!

Don't give a tip, but do give substantial voucher at Christmas.

I don't give a tip because I get my hair cut and coloured at home these days, it's a flat tenner or £20.

When I used to go to the salon - in the days I could afford it - I used to round it up to the nearest fiver - usually I tipped about £4. Nobody else gets tips for doing their job.

I don't tip taxi drivers either.

Interesting. A very mixed bag of answers. The £80 covered a cut and highlights I believe. It's tricky isn't it. If we tipped everyone for everything, we'd all be broke. The people on supermarket tills are probably on a low wage but we don't tip them. And I don't see why you need to tip for someone doing a good job - don't you pay them to do that. But it's just one of those things that we do. I'm off to the hairdressers next week, so I'll have to sit there pondering what to do. Frankly I'd rather pay more and have a no tips policy, saves any embarrassment if you ask me. Thanks everyone.
