For what reason would a person have the word UNDESIRABLE stamped across their passport while in USA. What could they possibly have done while there to merit this? How serious a thing could it possibly be?

It wouldn't need to be particularly serious at all. The US Immigration and Nationality Act places an automatic life-time ban on anyone entering their country if they've been convicted of an offence of 'moral turpitude'. All offences of theft (e.g. nicking a chocolate bar from a supermarket) count as 'moral turpitude'.
ooohh err...toi ?
well, this has happened to an ex work colleague, she went to texas in january supposedly for a 2 week holiday with a bloke she had met online, she overstayed (apparently never even booked a return flight which i thought was illegal) anyway, they married at the end of feb in texas, again, how legal the marriage was i don;t know, then in august he cheated on here and she had to come home but had no valid visa to be there and was terrified of being jailed as an illegal, the british embassy helped her but it took a month and alot of money to get her back, her sister had to go and get her. at the airport she was interviewed and had that stamped on her paperwork. she's now jobless and living with family and trying to get a divorce. nightmare.
sounds like a bit of a mug, tbh, dotty. Marrying a Texan you'd met online? It could have been George W Bush or anyone.

This happened about 20 years ago. A work colleague (bit of an eejit) was quite proudly showing us his passport with this Undesirable stamp across it. I know he was living in Montana and I believe he married a girl there. Then he said he was deported. We all asked why but he wasn't telling. Obviously the marriage didn't last because he came back here and she didn't! Somebody had posted something about travelling to USA and it just reminded me. I was just curious.
Sounds as if he was trying to stay in USA without visa/green card/other valid authirosation. Could well have gone on holiday, married to attempt to get citizenship, then stayed on, not realising that citizenship is not as easy as all that.
