Had a family day out with OH, daughter, SIL and 5 grandchildren. We went to Dudley Black Country Museum. Not been there for about 20 years. We walked underground in the mines, did a canal trip underground, had fish and chips cooked in dripping (delicious) looked in very old houses, the kids were fascinated when I told them about dolly tubs and possers. Mangles, ranges, back boilers and dampers. The weather was kind, by sunny but biting cold. Grandson did his usual posing, I don't need my coat!! He felt the cold in the underground canal trip! The staff were superb, so helpful, in most buildings there was someone in costume explaining what it was about and the history of the place. We also got a ticket for free entry as many times as we want later in the year.
Altogether a really good day. Just a recommendation not a question.
It sounds lovely Caran. We have something similar just up the road from us - a big old slate mine, with hospital and old houses. Freezing cold underground though, whatever the weather is like above it.
Caran, have you been to the museum of Liverpool life? You'd absolutely love it. I should work for Liverpool tourist board. I'm forever telling people what a great place it is. Actually, the Liverpool lilfe museum has just moved to a trendy new building.
Then I can definitely recommend Liverpool Caran. The whole of the old dock area is fantastic, Beatles exhibition, maritime museum, lots f nice cafe bars etc, great shops too.
Brilliant. Nothing better than seeing kids entranced, even though it may make you feel old when they are intrigued by stuff which you took for granted and feel shouldn't be in a museum ! (Why has that car got no seat belts? What's that stubber thing on the back of that bus seat? What's a "thrupenny bit"?)
