Working in the USA next summer

I'd like to get a summer job next year in the USA.I don't where abouts in the USA i would like to go or maybe what kind of work i would like to do.Can anyone give me some advice in how to go about this?

Has anyone else from the UK went over to the USA just for the summer to work?If so how did you go about it & find accomdation.

This is quite a straightforward thing to do if you are a student, there is an organisation called BUNAC who will help you (for a fee!). They mainly sort people out with work in summer camps but they do now also help you find other work out there too.  They are very useful in getting your visa sorted.  Look at www.bunac.org

If you aren't a student then working temporarily will be much more difficult.  The thing with the student visas is that it is a 'reciprocal' agreement - ie lots of American students come over to the UK too, thus getting over the argument that we are just taking their jobs.  Also if you are a student then the immigration authorities know that you have a reason to go back home at the end of the summer.  The only way to do it if you aren't a student would I think be to find a job on your own that will 'sponsor' your visa.  Even that would be very difficult I think unless you have a useful skill which is in short supply over there.

Thanxs for your answer morg.I am not a student.I work full time & have been in the same job now for a few years.I just fancied a change of direction for a couple of months next summer.

Do you have your heart set on the US? If not, and you are not too old (sorry if you are) then try one of our old colonies (!) they are usually a bit friendlier to us brits.  You can work temporarily in Canada up until you are 35, again you need an offer of work before you go but I imagine that may be easier to get there.

A brilliant option is to go to Australia or New Zealand.  Their 'Working Holiday' Visas can be applied for up to the age of 30, the idea is that you are basically on holiday but can work for up to 3 months at a time (I think) to support yourself.  There is a lot of work over there doing more menial jobs, but the good thing about this scheme is that you don't need a job before you get there, just some funds to show you can support yourself for a while.  Also flights do tend to be a little cheaper as it is their winter.  Very easy to apply for too.  I would highly recommend it!

Hey morg,once again thanxs for answering my question.

I will be 30 years old at the end of the year.The only reason why i mentioned the USA was i was there 10 years ago.I went to Orlando,Florida.I have reached a stage now in my life that i want a change.

Where about in the states i would like to go to i'm not too sure i have thought about Canada also.

I've never thought about Australia or New Zealand.You have given me food for thought.Once again many Thanxs

Just one more thing Gerry, there was a question on here a few weeks ago about the age you can be to get the Oz / NZ holiday visas.  The consensus was in the end that you had to apply and have documentation returned before your 30th birthday, but then you could wait up to 1 year to start using it by going to Oz/NZ.  It lasts for a year once you enter the country.  Just something to be aware of if you are 30 soon.  Hope you enjoy yourself whatever you decide.
