Wine Of The Week

BBQ weather or not (probably not) it's time to get shopping for the Bank Holiday weekend.
Firstly an old favourite from Majestic :
Mâcon-Lugny 2011 Louis Latour
About halfway between the freshness of a Macon Villages and the richer flavour of a White Burgundy. One of my long time favourites and a decent price at £7.99 from Majestic if you buy (at least) two. Good with fish and especially nice with creamy pasta dishes.

Next from M&S :
Montaignan Malbec 2011
A French Malbec from Languedoc. The French are fighting back (at last) by bottling decent wine under varietal labels. This is a match for most Argentinian Malbecs of a similar price and is full of the trademark fruity Malbec flavours. Only available online at £50 for a case of 6 - but note that you'll get 25% off this price if you buy any two cases of beer or wine - which makes it an effective £6.25 a bottle which is a very keen price. Great with that BBQ ... if only :)

Finally from Asda :
ASDA Extra Special Prosecco
Nice light fizz - good on its own or mix it 50/50 with some decent OJ for Buck's Fizz to drink with nibbles before a Sunday Lunch. On offer at £7 at the moment and rather better than some of the more well known 'brands' at a similar or higher price (hello Mr Martini).

There has been a second business around the corner run from an old chapel - didn't think much of their stock but then the company has been taken over and there's a young couple with some half decent bottles in, like the Navajas - £7-49.
My choice for tonight is not that, it's a Biberius, a Ribera del Duero, darker and earthier than a Rioja.....will report back if it's good.
Your Montaignan is really good and indeed good value at that price you indicate, the Malbec a cousin of Merlot....

hi dave. I bought a couple of bottles of Minarete Ribera Del Duero after your review last week. Very nice indeed with just the right amount of oak but fruity as well. fI shall try the Prosecco as its my OH birthday this week and we both prefer prosecco to a Cava or Champagne. Thank you for al the trouble you go to to try out all these wines and write a review, it must be purgatory for you ;-)
Just to say that the Biberius, a 2011 so not that old, is absolutely delish.
Tempranillo all the way (100%); it has a lovely youthful purple colour showing an average amount of ethanol on the marge. There's a delightful blackcurrant fruit on the nose and palate-wise loads of jammy fruit and fruitcake flavours.
The tannins are not too heavy, a lovely unctuous finish. Well worth the £8-99 I paid and if I had bought 6 for under the eight......maybe a case coming this way as this is a wine overshadowed by its more famous neighbours.
If you are interested, I can look up who sells it near to you, assuming you give the name of your town!
