Americas and its suburbs are (IMO) best avoided unless you like nightclubbing. DO go up Mount Tiede if there is a coach triprunning - it's an amazing place, and if you don't mind heights you can get a cable car to within a couple of hundred feet of the top. The air is thin up there though, so not if you have respiratory problems. Have a great time!
Firstly I hope you have a wonderful time, I'll give my opinion but it's very biased as I'm a beach fanatic. On the down side the beaches are few and far between, crowded and near the tourist areas. no pretty coves and the rough Aatlantic is no contest against the turquoise Med. I found the island a bit tacky and run down however there are some beautiful places inland and out of the way. We stayed in Los Gigantes which has stunning cliffs and some lovely restaurants and cocktail bars. I'd only go for Winter sun but you may look for something different from your holiday to me. Have fun.
Los Cristianos better area than Las Americas.Weekly markets full of tat. Some good bars, some bad. Local draught beer sold is sh*t, brewed for tourists. Drink 8 pints and still walk a straight line.
Check if cable car to top of Mount Teide is not closed due to wind,if you want to go to top before you set off.
North a lot cloudier and humid.
Stay clear of camera/electrical goods shops.
If you have hire car, dont park in Carga/Discarga zones at times shown. Your car will be towed away in minutes.
Do buy a Bono card for bus, saves you money, and you dont have to keep looking for change.
Busses few and far between after 11pm.
Dont forget to look left first when crossing the road.
When you spot timeshare tout walk apart from wife/spouse/girlfriend/partner. they dont bother single persons.

If you care at all about whales in captivity you will not go to Loro Parque

We no longer tolerate elephants, tigers, lions, chimps in the circus, nor dancing bears. Killer whales and dolphins in captivity for entertainment is equally abhorrent

We adore Los Cristianos and go three times each winter. There are some great bars and restaurants, no doubt you will find your own. The looky looky men and the Chinese ladies can be a pain, but a firm and polite No Thank You will send them on their way. If you are looking for a more traditional destination, the north of the island is more 'Spanish'
