Holiday On The Coast Please

Not far from Surrey please somewhere different and pretty with a few pubs for the evening, we have exhausted all the usual places, looking for somewhere new ... Mr Smurf wants to dip his feet in the water and sit on the beach ... Also best places to stay? Thanks all

Whitstable springs to mind, good pubs and restaurants and some nice villages nearby to explore. There are some crappy areas but they can easily be avoided.

I had the pleasure of staying in Whitstable earlier this year. It's an upmarket town but still unpretentious. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, including some really nice pubs. The Old Neptune, by the water's edge, claims to have the best sunsets of any pub in the country. Having seen some of them, it would seem to be a justifiable claim!

However the Ship Centurion, on the High Street, was actually my favourite pub there.

While Whitstable, per se, might not have much of a beach, Tankerton (which is effectively a suburb of Whitstable) has a beach which is very popular on a sunny day. (You can walk there easily from Whitstable).

Or it would take you about a 3 hour drive to get to the jewel of the East Anglian coast, Southwold (which is totally delightful).

Or Studland in Dorset,quaint villages nearby, gorgeous sandy beaches at Studland and along to Shell bay (unlike the pebbles near Whitstable), beautiful Dorset countryside and a quick ferry to Sandbanks and the high life of Poole.

Chichester? Fabulous beach at West Wittering and beautiful city/architecture/pubs/restaurants if the weather is not too good. Like today.

Not really different, but Bournemouth is clean and nice. I don't really like hotels, so I could only suggest renting a cottage for the duration.

If you don't mind a stonier beach, go towards Leap in Lymington - you can get the best of both worlds - beach AND the New Forest. A little info on here:
