I understand that when you reach 85 you no longer pay for a passport renewal, my husband is 85 in 3 years time and his passport needs renewing now. Does anyone know if he has to pay for 10 years in advance or do they make reduction so that he only pays for the next 3 years,
Many thanks in advance

It'll be free when he comes to renew when he gets to 92

There's an advice line listed here, but I'd be surprised if any discounts or refunds will be available in these cirxumstances
If he was born before 2 September 1929, his renewal is free. If he was born after that date, it`s not.
If he needs a passport, presumably he will also need travel insurance. I'd love to know how he gets insurance at that age - my father couldn't.

I don't think that he will be travelling abroad when he is 92 just wanted to travel for the next few years really oh well the passport office will gain if we finish travelling before the next 10 years are up, Thanks for your reply!
He`s only 82 atalanta. You can get travel insurance at that age.

Theres no problem getting insurance we travelled to Spain in May and got very good cover and not too expensive and with declaration of medication.
I'm not sure the passport office does gain in any way as a result of his stopping travelling in a few years.

Does anyone know the reason for this date of 2nd September 1929 and the reason why the passport charge is waived?
i think it's to do with people visiting war graves isn't it?

They will gain if he pays £80 or whatever it is to renew and only travels until he is 85 they will have the 6months that's left on the passport have I got the idea of this right or am I being a bit thick ?
Question Author
Never heard this about the war graves but I suppose it could be sounds quite plausible.
ie it covers all the people who could have possibly signed up in the 2nd world war
Question Author
Ok will just have to accept that if we want to go abroad we will have to pay the full amount.
but you wont lose/gain anything, as he wouldn't qualify anyway
awwww, you mean i'm not official aberrant?
I thought it was about visiting war graves but I couldn't match up the dates- but I was thinking of 1939 rather than the end date of 1944 when I suppose there could have been young soldiers aged 15 who now want to travel.
If that's the case it may be a one-off gesture and mr.rkp62 may have to pay again if he wants to renew in 2023
Nothing is official on AB unless there is a link..
lol
