I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop which I bought earlier this year with Windows 8 already installed. It has a 500gb hard drive which is 75% free.
I have been trying to install the free upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the store but it downloads to 51%, says 'preparing your computer', then the status bar just drops back down to the beginning. I have tried this several times and get the exact same result.
Can anyone advise me about this problem?

I'm no expert but what's your broadband speed like? Mine is so slow that an Office upload ran all night and still didn't install. I took my laptop to work and it took 15 minutes!

I have a fibre connection with average speed of 35 mps so this is not the problem.
Before you try to upgrade to Windows 8.1 make sure that the existing Windows 8 is fully updated and also I would run a repair on windows updates just to make sure all is ok. To download the upgrade a fast internet connection is best as the download is quite substantial.

Tried all the above so I think I will have to contact Toshiba for advice. Thanks for suggestions folks.
