We want to go to Santorini

My wife and I want to go to Santorini in September from Edinburgh. Does anyone know the best way to get there? if not from Edinburgh, the nearest departure point. Possibly the cheapest way and a recommended hotel in a popular resort. This will be our first time in Greece so want it to be memorable.

Santorini's a pretty small island, and really has only one small town (Thira or Fira - you'll see it spelt both ways) and a handful of tiny villages.  Having said that, it's a beautiful place, and the archaeological remains are stunning.  For a start, try www.santorini.net, www.santorini.com or www.travel-to-santorini.com

The cheapest way is to take a low cost airline flight to athens and then take one of the many ferries that call there.

Dolphin lines run a fast boat (Flying Cat 4) which also calls in and Mykonos, Ios, Paros, Naxos Santorini and Crete. Not the cheapest ferry service, but comfortable and fast.
