I worked with a guy who lived in Hale and he said a lot of footballers and celebs live there and have gated properties
Worsley, in Salford, is lovely. Didsbury is nice, lots of young professionals and bars, pubs and some shops and places to eat about.

You are heading out Cheshire way (well, as opposed to main Manchester) with Hale (and Hale Barns) and Bowden and out round Poynton and Prestbury, much more affluent and popular with footballers and such. There are also some nice places round Stockport way such as Bramhall.

The city centre is very popular to live and there are some lovely apartment developments which attract more affluent people. Castlefield has a nice young professional feel to it too with some lovely bars (think posh barbeque outside on summer weekends) and round the canals.
One thing to be aware of is that there seems to be a fair bit of artistic licence is describing where some properties are and extensions of areas with better reputations, renaming of areas being regenerated etc... to steer people away from the connotations which come with where they actually are.

Common examples are parts of Hulme (lots of new development there) which are actually Moss Side and Worsley which are actually Walkden (quite a difference!).

It also depends how "affluent" you want as some nicer areas are bordered by some not so nice areas whereas a bit further out that can be less so.
