Most shop assistants in the main parts of the cities speak good english, as do the people in the hotels we stayed in and reasonable restaurants. Getting around via taxis was another thing. The hotel staff made sure we had a card with the hotel address on it so we could show the taxi drivers where we wanted to go back to, otherwise it would have been impossible. The trip hired an english speaking guide who was fantastic. He was called Jason, after Jason Wyngarde (they can adopt an english name based on a favourite character). I have to say that visiting Japan was much better and easier, the language barrier was less of a problem. Japanese people actually want to help you. Oh and another thing, China is filthy, japan is spotless. Enjoy.
We stopped in H.K. Last Oct on return from OZ, Kwaloon was our stopping place, we found the people Friendly / helpful, try & get on the open top bus for a trip around, it's about a tenner but well worth it, you will get the " FLY BOYS" Trying to sell you genuine Rolex, for a knock down price they are worth it, make your way to Natham Rd, the road is full of good shopping areas, also the night time markets. good trip, & a good hol.
