We are having a week's holiday in Bath in July. What are the not- to- be -missed places to visit? We don't want to travel too far out of Bath and would prefer to spend time in Bath itself.
There is architecture all around. The Royal Crescent is worth a look. The Baths themselves, obviously. The cathedral. But just wander around. Some good restaurants too. May wish to consider not driving in though. They have got less car friendly as the years have gone by.
I really enjoyed the free walking tour that starts outside the pump rooms. You just turn up at the appointed times (runs every day) and they split you into groups depending on how many people turn up. Takes between 2 and 2 and a half hours. Only thing that was lost on me was the references to Jane Austen (Haven't read any!).
Guides make it very clear that they do not want any payment and will decline tips.
...and one a sunny day find the canal, behind the railway station and beside the river Avon. Take a stroll along it and look at the lovely stepped gardens of the riverside properties. Watch boaters navigate the locks and finish up in Sydney. Gardens. Theres a lovely recently modernised gallery and museum here, Holbourne Museum. Call in for lunch or a coffee and have a little look round. Its free.
From here walk back into town along the very grand Great Pulteney Street and over the pretty bridge. Stop for a look at the weir and watch the swans play in the water.
On another day this is the place to pick up a boat trip.
If you fancy a day out of Bath, but prefer not to take the car, then catch the train a couple of stops east to Bradford Upon Avon. River, canal, lunch home.
Alternatively go a few stops the other way to Bristol and take a city tour on the tourist bus. Stop off at the suspension bridge and at SS Gt. Britain as well as the city centre.
