Tube Travel

I have to work in London next week and will be travelling from Hanger Lane to Denmark Hill via Shepherds Bush and Clapham junction TFL says the journey will cost £1.60 using my oyster card. I will be changing lines and stations. I am confused about using pink and yellow card readers, do I swipe in and out at every station. Is there anyone out there who can put my mind at ease.

I believe you just tap once at the beginning of your journey and again at the end..... Nowhere in between?

I don't know the route but it looks as if you will have to use your card to get you through the gates at Hanger Lane tube station and - again to go out through the gates as you exit the tube at Shepherds Bush. You would then tap in as you go on to the overground line (you shouldn't need to use it to open the gates, just tap on a reader somewhere near the entrance). Tap out at Denmark Hill, again on a reader somewhere near the exit

sorry, just to make that a bit clearer, I'm assuming Shepherds Bush underground and overground are in the same building (that's the bit I don't know for sure) but will have separate entrances and exits, so you'd exit the underground then enter the overground. I don't think you get a choice of colour for readers, just use whatever is there.

If you change from Tube to Overground at the same station you must tap the pink reader with your Oyster card or you will be charged the maximum fare. On completing your journey just tap the normal yellow reader to get the correct fare deducted. If changing between a main line train and either a Tube or Overland train, the tapping of the pink reader must be done to avoid a maximum fare.

at shepherds bush the 2 stations are separate but adjacent. to change from central line to overground you need to leave the station and cross the busway to the other station. you'll need to open the barriers at both with your card.

Tap on the yellow at the begining and end of your journey and if you see a pink reader when you change at Clapham Junction, tap on that too. Since you will not be going into zone 1 the fare will be cheaper and the pink reader is ther to confirm the route you took around London rather than a route into zone 1 and back out again.

The central line and Overground stations at Shepherds Bush are two separate stations with a road between them. You need to tap out and in again when passing between them - and will probably have to anyway

The system will put it together as one journey

I live in the West Midlands & have not been to London for years. I loved the odd visit to see the Capital but reading this about travelling in the City has me totally bemused, I think it will be a long time before I visit again.

WR, it's not difficult, really - you just need to make sure you touch in & out where necessary so the system knows where you are and charges you accordingly. otherwise it assumes you're still travelling and keeps adding charges until the daily cap is reached.
