Holidays In Cornwall, Arriving By Coach.

Hi.
My mother lives in Gloucester & is elderly, she would like to have a holiday in Cornwall, but does not want to drive all that way. does anyone know of companies that arrange pickup from coach station & take to hotels & return.

There are absolutely loads of travel companies that do that kind of thing. Have you looked in the local paper?

Companies like Shearings (as mentioned) will have hotel holidays, all inclusive, in Cornwall. I think you are suggesting a hotel she's arranged herself, and how she gets from the bus station. Better, in her situation, to book a package holiday, IMO - takes away all those worries.

The Gloucester Tourist Information Centre should have all of the brochures from local coach companies who operate holidays from their area. They're on Southgate Street and open from 1000 to 1700 on Mondays and from 0930 to 1700 from Tuesday to Saturday. Phone [phone] or email [email protected]

Alternatively, there are a few train services from Gloucester to Penzance each day which require only one change (at either Bristol Temple Meads, which is quickest, or sometimes at Westbury), Assistance could be provided at the stations and then a taxi taken to a hotel.

St Erth and change for St Ives, the taxi ride is very short to any hotel in the town and I would suggest that she not go for one in Carbis Bay as to all the walking and hills involved.

If she wants all inclusive and a very good 'granny hotel' look at the Nare, on the St Just-Roseland Peninsula, nearest stations are Truro or St Austell - beautiful location on the beach and well set up for oldies, good food but no shops etc....

I don't know how wealthy your Mum is information, but beware of the Nare Hotel. The Nare Hotel is a beautiful place but you fly to the Caribbean for less than it costs to stay there ! It costs £348 in high season ! Lovely place but I am not sure if it worth that huge price. It also has a reputation for being a bit "snobby" unless you are very wealthy.

Newquay has planty of Hotels that coach operators use. Its very pretty and is lovely, as long as you avoid high season. Also Penzance is wonderful...very well situated, with direct train access. I know Penzance very well and would recommend the Queens Hotel or the Beachfield....both right on the sea front and worth paying extra for that sea view.

Most of us Cornish can't stand Newquay and Penzance isn't far behind...the beach at Penzance is not that great....the best things there are Archie Browns (a good veg restaurant), Jelberts icecream (actually in Newlyn) and the art gallery,(a great collection of Newlyn School).

An alternative to the Nare down the coast from there is the Lugger at Portloe...small village, a little hilly, the hotel over the harbour and a second pub (The Ship) for crab sandwiches.....Hadn't realised that the Nare was in that league - is that 348 a night for full board, Mikey.....? I haven't looked at the web site.

No, B+B, plus afternoon tea. It rise to £518 per night for their best rooms ! Definitely more expensive that Barbados ! Don't get me wrong...I had lunch there a few years ago and it was very nice but most of advantages of that huge price would be wasted if it poured down with rain.

I think you are being unduly harsh about Penzance ( but not necessarily about Newquay ! ) I keep a caravan at St Buryan and have come to know Penzance very well over the last 20 years. A walk along the Promenade down to Newlyn, to have a Jelberts is surely one of lifes pleasures ! Add to that a pint sitting outside the Luggers, or a proper pasty, sitting on the Harbour wall at Mousehole is heaven ! St Ives is a short train ride away as well. Causeway Head for a bit of shopping, and that open-top double decker bus around the Peninsula, and all this without driving anywhere... so whats not to like about Penzance ?

Mikey - keep all your text as to West Penwith, add the Minnack and Lamorna and through to Jelberts.....eliminate Lands End, that could be used for some bombing practice for what they have done there, thanks to Peter de Savary who started the ruination. Thank God he didn't mess up Falmouth or Charlestown. As to keeping Penzance or Newquay, I'd opt for the former.

information - Mousehole may be a very good place for her to go, not that far from Penzance station and a lovely chocolate-box fishing village, famous for its Stargazy pie and also, tragically, one of the worst RNLI accidents.

Look at the Old Coastguard Hotel or the Ship Inn (the latter probably cheaper and on the harbour front)....great bistro behind it in No2 Fore Street....bright, airy, really good fish and reasonably priced for the quality that you get.

And Jelberts - the best Cornish ice cream around and been there since I was little and beyond.....now owned by the Glover family, Helen of Olympic 1st gold medal fame.

select double at £95 a night harbour facing or 110 for a deluxe one, that is after the discount for a single and high season. Low season 65 and 70 respectively....
