We are staying on a camp site near Hayle in Cornwall and every night flocks of geese fly over at about this time every night. They go in the same direction at around 7.30-8.00pm and fly in formation, almost like the Red Arrows! We are fascinated. Does anyone know why this is?

We are getting this every night where I live in Dorset, they do it every year. I've assumed they are flying from their daytime hangout to their sleeping quarters (I'm closed to some water filled quarries). I see them go one way in the evening and back again in the morning. Lovely.

Yes, well there are lots of places with water around here. It's spectacular!
We live near the "Central Flyway" here in the U.S. and are treated to the honkers flying north in the spring (their nesting grounds are in Canada and the Arctic) and then south about this time of the year. The last few nights have been lit by the bright Harvest Moon and they fly at night as well. Thousands of them!

You know, of course why one arm of the "V" is always longer than the other, don't you?
Why is that clanad?
They are beating the Winter! We are expecting the storks flying south any time now - it's quite a sight and quite a noise (live in Vienne, France). Always a herald that the weather is about to deteriorate (or improve when they return in Spring).
Thought you'd never ask, pusskin... there's more geese in the long arm... I'm outta here with my coat...
Geece are fascinating arent they. We've had two lots fly over today going from right to left each time, in a V SHAPE. Something to do with aero dynamics? We do have some lakes around here so they are off on their travels to some sunshine! Lucky blighters.
