Only kidding Mikey. I lived In Abergavenny for part of my childhood and have lovely memories of that time. Wales is beautiful.

Wales has some pleasant parts. I'm sure many folk would be happy to live there. And since they, not being England, tend to get many privileges courtesy of a national tier of government and the cash to offer stuff with, all the more incentive. The downside being one can get a bit further south to slightly warmer areas.

Abergavenny is one of my favourite places. My lady friend and I like to visit for the day and we always manage to go on a Tuesday, which is Market Day. There is also a wonderful music shop there, that doesn't sell Pop music at all, and is a haven for us Classical fans. A record shop that sells a good range of Classical records is a real rarity these days.

When I was young, slimmer and fitter, my mate and I always climbed up to the top of the Sugar Loaf every Easter...the views are wonderful. Now I would need a chair-lift !

If I remember correctly it was a cattle market Mikey? And they had a cinema, is that still there?

And we often used to go off on a summer Sunday with our backpacks and climb Sugar Loaf; I would have been about 9-10 years old.

OG, the Welsh Assembly is just another layer of expensive bureaucracy. Prescriptions are free in Wales but the NHS in general is worse than in England as is education.

One of the most wonderful thing to be found in Abergavenny, or anywhere else in the world, is 'The Jesse', an elaborate, very large 15th century wooden carving which was once part of an even larger carving forming a Jesse Tree telling the lineage of Jesus Christ based on that in the Bible. It is unique in Britain and described by Tate Britain as one of the finest medieval sculptures in the world.
It is in The Priory Church of St Mary, and is worth making a special visit to the town for that alone.

TTT...I am English and was born a real Cockney, although I live in Wales now. Didn't have much choice when I was 15, as my fathers job took us to Swansea. But I love it now, warts and all. Cornwall would be my preferred residence, if I could afford it though ! Mild weather and all them Proper Pasties.

But extoll the virtues of England if you like....publish and be damned !

Go into a pub in Wales, there will likely be a silence and then the conversation will start up again in Welsh.

Sqad...shame on you.....you have been sitting in the Mediterranean sun for too long !

Its true that there was a campaign, by a few hotheads, against second homes, but to my knowledge there hasn't been an incident for many years now. Forgotten about by most people and anyway, its been outflanked by the rise in popularity of Plaid Cymru, and the existence of the Welsh Assembly and the Welsh Language Act.

I have experienced the Quiet Pub routine myself, once or twice but only in Gog Land, up north, and never in the south. Offering to buy a round of drinks usually works though !

Alas, singing isn't what it was here in Wales, nor the Brass Bands. So many of them were Colliery-based and we have precious few mines left now !
But we still have Bryn, although his Eisteddfod days are over and we have to share him with the great Opera houses of the world now. Here he is, in non-operatic mode for a change...be patient, as he doesn't come on until about 03:34:::
