I dont travel by train very often so i was wondering about the reserved tickets on the back of seats that I see every time travel by train. Everyone seems to ignore them and sit anywhere. Have they been left on from a previous day? Is that why they are ignored? Do people actually reserve particular seats and what happens if that seat is taken when you get on? Just wondered.

Do you know! A lady I bumped in to on the same train lost her coat down the gap between platform & train in the scramble!! No joke!
It's the only way to travel, Yont.
I've never travelled first class ... I want to be a lady Tilly. What do you get in first class that you don't in cheap & cheerful?
No problems with your seat, waiter/waitress service, tea/ coffee, fruit juice, wine, food, nice people to chat to and free wi fi.
The last time I travelled any distance on a train Birmingham to Sheffield I had to stand all the way, there were absolutely no seats left anywhere.
Oh that sounds divine Tilly. Thank you.
You don't need to travel by train, Yont. You enjoy driving your nice, shiny car.
I don't like driving. The train for me every time.
I've done that in thpast Tony, thought reserving a seat would be different. I'm going first class next time!
Book well in advance, Elina. It's usually a lot cheaper.
But Yilly I was going to Sheffield to collect a car !.

So am I, Elina.
When we travelled from Norwich to London first class, seats reserved, the train was cancelled. We got the next one, all seats were double booked because of the missing train!
Yes I will Tilly.
That was bad luck, sibs. I hope you told someone to shift.
We got there first, Tilly.
Jolly good, sibs.
I used to work in London three days a week (from Stockport). Used to buy Standard Class return tickets. On the return we used to upgrade to First Class for an extra £10. Nice warm comfortable seats , some kind of decent food, a gin and tonic and a miniature bottle of red wine. If you were really pleasant with the staff you could easily get an extra two or three bottles of wine for your briefcase. Well worth the extra!
I do Manchester to Exeter three times a year at least. The Manchester to Birmingham leg - especially on a Saturday - is always crowded. That is why I go first class. Despite the expense ( even with my Senior Railcard ) it is worth it. Even though I always reserve a seat there is invariably a choice. For shorter journeys I usually have to set off so early that there are plenty of seats available.
All sounds very civilised to me :0)
It is Elina. Treat yourself next time.
If I ever have to travel again by train I certainly will novalis!
