I am off to South Africa in a few weeks time and am looking to hire a SIM card for my mobile phone. This card will be used mainly to make calls back to UK and I was wondering the best place to hire one. Am I better to wait until I get to South Africa or can I hire one in the UK before I go. I do want one that I can top up easily when I am over there. I should add, I do not need any data usage on the phone as I will be using a basic mobile phone while there.
Lebara cards are great for calling overseas from the UK but most definitely NOT the other way round! (You'd pay £1.99 per minute to make a call back to the UK and 99p per minute to receive one).
We are going there next week and will be doing as Brinjal said and getting a local card. Bought them from a supermarket last time for 99 cents. You may need to show ID to activate them though.
Thanks for everyone's help. I have contacted vodacom in South Africa and if I purchase an international SIM card from them for 30 Rand I can then make calls back to UK for .89c cents per minute. Chapter than using my payg in this country to make calls!!
