Getting To Windermere.

Has anyone travelled to Windermere from Euston by train ?

I am trying to advise an Australian friend who is visiting the Lake District for the first time and I am trying to fill him in with names of stations, distances, train times etc.

I guess his best bet will be to book up with train line .com or similar. And I think there is a change at Oxenholme ?

Don't book with trainline, use national rail.

Yes you have to change at Oxenholme and then get the line to Windermere which is where it stops.

Windermere is the only station in the Lake District but the other option is to get the train to Penrith then get the bus to Keswick (obviously this is best if they are staying in Keswick)

I'd just like to point out that Windermere village (where the railway station is) is not on the lake. You need to go a couple of miles to Bowness to reach the lake.

unless you're meeting someone there, the lakes is no place to be without a car. travel by train from euston to liverpool and collect a hire car (via easycar) from lime street; a fast train can cost as little as £20 each way and if you don't mind it taking an hour longer and a change at stafford, as little as £12 each way. a pretty reasonable car can be had for around £85-£90 for a 3 day hire.

Change at Oxenholme, train on takes about 25 minutes or so....puts you into the top of Windermere, the Lake about 1.5 miles down from there, plenty of buses and there used to be a hire car business.

Tell your friend not to get a taxi from the ranks at the station (oxenholme or Windermere) as there ridiculously expensive - use a private hire taxi firm with set prices. Best one is lakeside taxis, there nearly half the price of the hackney carriage taxis.

might he better booking a coach tour from London or near and let someone else do all planning and they can just enjoy the scenery ?
