�vila is the capital of �vila Province in central Spain. The town is a commercial and tourist centre situated in a livestock-raising region. Its many fine monuments of medieval architecture include a Gothic cathedral dating mostly from the 14th century, and the well-preserved dark granite walls of the ancient town, dating mainly from the 12th century. The walls have imposing gates and are surmounted by many turrets.
