For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I agree with the above. Search for reasonable hotels and look for special offers with those hotels. There are lots of reasonable flights to Amsterdam and the ride from the airport is fast and interesting. The harbour tour is informative and fun too. Hire a bike but don't leave it anywhere you shouldn't - the authorities are mean. There are lots of things to see and do - and you will come back "educated" in so many ways.
As ever, I recommend that you can also save by using the facilities recommended in www.worldwidetravel.org.
Booked my hotel at http://www.bookings.nl/hotels
4 nights for 180 euros including buffet breakfast. Room is single with toilet and shower. Booking confirmed with credit card but can cancel anytime before day of arrival. Booked a return flight with KLM from Glasgow for 94. Never been before but hopefully it will be fun.

Other people have already suggested ways of finding cheap hotels. If you're near London (or can get there cheaply), one of the easiest and cheapest ways to get to Amsterdam is to take the train from Liverpool Street to Harwich for the Stena HSS sailing. Rail company 'one' offer a 50 return fare from London to any station in Holland (which obviously includes Amsterdam).

(Declaration of interest: I work for 'one' but I don't get any bonuses based on ticket sales to Holland!!).
