I am going to Amsterdam for a week and we will be with kids. What is there to do there for kids and also is bearable for adults?
I can't wait to go. Actually what else is there to do there regardless if for kids or not?

are they old enough to appreciate a Van Gogh gallery? If so they're in clover.

There's a list of things here

I don't have personal experience in the last 20 years, though.
That link looks great but Amsterdam is the last place I would take Kids.
ours was fine there when he was 4 and again when he was 14 (very adept at spotting drug dealers). But it will probably depend on age range.
The Anne Frank house is worth a visit. http://annefrank.org/
canal cruises too.
just avoid certain cafes and no window shopping in certain areas lol!
Haven`t been there for years but I remember Ann Frank`s house, the canal and the flower market. The weather tends to be much the same as the UK
A canal cruise is definitely worth doing:

If the weather's fine, hop on a train to Zandvoort (which is Amsterdam's seaside resort):

(OK, I know that it's not exactly sandcastle-building weather at this time of the year but it's still worth a look).

If you go to the KattenKabinet you could challenge the kids to count the number of images of cats there - but it might take them rather a long time!

You have already decided you are going there, and NOW you ask what there is to do there.

That is a strange way round.

Surely you look at a place and see what there is to do there, THEN if you like the look of it you go there.
Its depends on how old your kids are but I would be very wary, especially at night, unless you ant them to have a very rapid sex education !

The Anne Frank house is a must, and the canals are fun.
and be careful which cafe you take them to lol!

Tried my first spliff in a coffee house.Ruined my long week end there. Glad Mrs retro was strong enough to support me back to the Hotel. What do people see in that stuff? :-)
I can't think of many children's activities. Brewery visits,Diamond cutting establishments,Art Galleries,Cannabis Museum,Sex Museum.Resistance Museum. May be a dolls museum??
your're on your way but it was one of my most horrible holidays.

Ironically I met my neighbour with several of her kids at the airport and she said never again - she said for her wherever she was everything just closed at the dot of 11 at night. Really you should have gone for kiddies places - none in Amsterdam.

As somebody has given you some links - that's all about you can do follow them. Also if your kids are young look for those dreadful bikes. I do hope it goes well for you.
I liked it but it was a bit too busy for me and every few meters someone would say charlie or E's....
I love Amsterdam but would never take kids and that is what the OP was about.
The Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem is a good day out, it's about an hour by train from Amsterdam Centraal.
Retro...what do people see in the stuff !...Pink Elephant apparently !
I thought they were chased by dragons and pink elephants were for those who over imbibed the foaming nut brown. :-)
I recall taking cannabis when I was about 14-15, while camping on the beach with some school friends. For some reason or other, I had this fantastic dream afterwards about being with Tintin, in one of his adventures ! I can quite distinctly remember the almost fluorescent colours of everything....psychadelic in fact !

But I never repeated the experience ever again !
