I have just read that foreign visitors over 70 can get free public transport in Prague. Has anyone else heard of this or indeed taken advantage of free transport there?

Not Prague as far as I know. Budapest gives free travel to EU citizens over 65.

»foreigners over 70 years of age can travel for free on Prague public transport. To be able to travel in Prague public transport for free they need to arrange a special document issued by the Prague Public Transport Company in their offices listed on http://www.dpp.cz/en/advance-sales-in-metro/ for which they need their ID (passport), a passport sized photo (with signature on the back side) and to fill in a short form to be able to buy the document for 20 CZK (ca. 1€). I stand corrected jamesnan - I was only 69 when we went in June so it wasn't applicable. The campsite owner told us about the reduced fares for Seniors though.

If you are 60 years old or over, it is always worth checking what the rules are in whichever country you are to visit because it is fairly common (outside the UK) for discounts to be given to older people in general wherever they come from (widely differing thresholds and rules though) - you may only have to show proof of age (e.g. passport which you will have needed anyway to escape the UK) and in some places you may be taken at your word.

Following on from this previous post we have just returned from Prague and indeed all public transport was free if you are over 70 ie buses, trams, metro and ferry. Nothing was needed to show except if an inspector should require to see something, and then a passport would suffice. We made good use of it!!!
