We'll have a few hours spare in London this week and if its a nice day,might take a trip on the river.

I don't mind being a typical tourist and hearing a commentary rather than taking a commuter's ferry if there are such things. Most likely we'll travel from Westminster to the Tower.

I haven't been on the river for years and wonder if you can hop on whenever it suits, or whether you have to pre-book these days?

A good trip to do is the Emirates cable car from just outside the O2 arena and then the river bus back down to Westminster (or wherever).

.. ..Take the train to Waterloo, ask anyone how to get to the London Eye, a couple of minutes walk. To the right of the Eye you can get tickets for around £10 for the river cruise, no need to book in advance, or cross the bridge to the left of the Eye by Big Ben, stay on right hand side, walk down the stairs to the right, and get the boat there. You can hop on and off, so get off at Greenwich and ask where the indoor market is, lots of tasty street food there, antiques, crafts etc. take a look around, then back to the Tower, get off here, a tour of the Tower will take a good couple of hours or you can walk along the river outside the Tower, hop on another boat and back to the Eye. Commentary is very funny, they expect a tip ! Enjoy London. A sunny day will be a bonus otherwise wrap up warm ... Zac I think the Eye is much better than the Emirates trip if you only have a few hours in London.....

Maybe next time Zacs. This time we'll be in Victoria/Westmister when we have a couple of hours free time. Thinking of heading down to Westminster Pier take a boat on the river to the Tower. Or the market at Greenwich sounds great, thanks Smurf. I didn't want to get there to find long queues for the boat or pre booked only.

You should do a trip at night, sometime, especially the Greenwich and Canary Wharf areas. With all the lights from the buildings on the banks you feel as if you're in another country. I loved it.

Down the Thames to Greenwich ... get off and wander round. Lots of things to see not least the markets.. antique and craft ones, the park and observatory, the fan museum ... and then get a boat back to charing cross...

as well as sightseeing cruises, there are regular river bus services; pay in advance or at the pier before you get on.

My recommendation is a river trip down to Greenwich. On a nice day its a delight. To make a change, go back into Town on the Docklands Light Railway, but walk under the Thames in the Tunnel and catch the train from the north side.

The views of the Old Royal Naval College from the river as you approach are wonderful.

Walk past the long queues to get on the Cutty Sark, as there are much better things to see in the area.

While in Greenwich, why not walk up to the Royal Observatory ?

I did a similar trip to Mikey last year. My daughter got an online deal for a boat trip from London Bridge to Greenwich. Tickets for the Cutty Sark and the observatory, all this for £24-00.
