Cairo And Beyond, Ticket Info

hello all,

has anyone been to Cairo, Aswan etc? I would love to see all the highlights but im wondering how you go about getting tickets to places like the valley of the kings and such. Am i able to get tickets when i turn up or book in advance?

Any general tips too are welcomed.

lumination's a seasoned traveller (see avatar). As 237SJ says, do it locally, they're crying out for tourists. Best fly between Cairo and Luxor, I think, it's quite a distance. There are cruises between Luxor and Aswan though I've no idea if many are sailing at the moment.

jno you can easily hire a felucca to convey you from Luxor to Aswan for very little - its basic but very calming.

We took the train , many years ago from Cairo to Luxor and on to Aswan. Great journey. Take the sleeper "tourist" train rather than the regular service as its maginally more comfortable, with a toilet, a bunk each and some food served.

I can't imagine there are queues anywhere now, so just turn up. Take a taxi from Cairo out the Pyramids, and include a general tour of the city on the way back. Do the same in Luxor and take a felluco ride in Aswan.

You say that it is between Egypt or India. If you like just turning up with nothing planned, I`d go for India.

Further - I have turned up in Sri Lanka with no accomodation booked but with Lonely Planet book in hand. There is always somewhere to go. Which part of India are you planning to go to first?

The pedlars in Egypt are the worst I have ever encountered. They will even go so far as to lay hands on you and pull you. You will get them to stop by threatening to call the tourist police, but it is still very uncomfortable. The crowds should be much diminished from the peak of Egypt's popularity, so at least you won't find the most famous sites too overcrowded.
Beware of being cheated, even in what seem to be regular shops. If you buy discs of (say) local folk music, make sure the "sealed" case actually has a disc in it.

have a look at the group adventure type holiday, exodus or explore for example. They will do Cairo then cruise and you are safer in s group, and get much less hassle.
