Anybody got any ideas ideas of how to do nyc on a budget??? ie places to stay, places to eat???

HAVE  been NYC  SEVEN times  places to eat there are thousands and cheap meals large b'fast  around 5dollars  deli where you can help yourself  to selection of meals. you could look on the net for hotels there's plenty to choose from,  I stay in a rather expensive place roosevelt but a lovely hotel near grand central station.worth it very comfortable.

Best way from the airport is by bus it takes you to grand central or hotel was 28dollars return when I was there in May.theres lots to do in NYC a really grand place, plenty to see you will need coins for bus they don't take notes, subways do,  thearte tickets are not cheap but some lovely shows, around 60 - 100 dollars but couldn't go without seeing a broadway show. NYC on a budget depends what that is really but if its once in a lifetime trip worth it. enjoy your trip. hope this is of some help. if you have any other questions will help.

i'm going to new york on friday and i'm staying in a hostel which is $29 a night (about �16).  go to hostelbookers.com 

i've also got a thing called a citypass for �32 from attraction-tickets-direct.co.uk which gives u free entry to the guggenheim, the american museum of natural history, the intrepid sea-air-space museum, the empire state building observatory, the museum of modern art and a two hour circle line cruise.  pretty good value. 

there are also a million things u can do there for free.  when are u going?

thanks for that.....going with a budget of �600 for five days...worried it wont be enough

�600 for five days is more than enough.  mine cost about a grand for ten days, and i'm doing EVERYTHING!  you'll have a whale of a time.  when i get back we can post endless threads with me telling u all about it. :)

When we went to NY. My husband arranged for a car to pick us up from the airport. He offered his services for the next day to take us around NY. (maybe a bit risky with hindsight but). He was really good. He took us to all the places he thought would have been of interest and waited for us. He took us through the (is it the jewish part where the men all have long plaits and wear long dark coats). That was like a different world. In the evening he took us to the theatre and picked us up after the show. We were only there for 4 days  so this was really usefull. We went in December a few years ago just before Christmas. Had a great time.

The car service idea mentioned by Maggie is very good. We frequently use car services such as this. Any hotel will have access to a preferred company. They are very safe and very good value per hour. Even a stretch limo is only about $60 an hour.

Now you mention it AllYourBase I think the car hire was organised through the hotel. So it was quite safe. I couldn't remember as it was a few years ago now.
