Decent Camera On Citybreaks

Jennykenny's question on Rome has prompted me to ask this more specific query. I have a fairly decent DSLR that I never take abroad on holiday as it's not suited to beach life however next week I'm off to Venice for the first time which is obviously somewhere you'd want to take a lot of quality pictures. I'm concerned about lugging a decent camera round my neck from the safety point of view (inviting thieves), would I better with my cheaper compact in my pocket, what do others do?

I was in Venice last year and I got some great photos with my iPhone, (I don't have a 'good' camera), and never felt ill at ease. Although I take the point that it is much smaller and less obvious than the camera you have.

Just about everybody in Venice has a good camera hanging round their neck. There's no point going there and not getting the pictures you want. We've been 2 or 3 times with expensive cameras and video cameras and not been worred.

Thanks Jenny, the answers you've been given suggest you have to go out with nothing - no handbag, no cards, nothing but a few euros in a bumbag. I've never been on a European city tour (well not for years) so it's got me thinking.

I'm here now and bhg is right. Everyone has cameras. Nearly every woman Ive seen also has a handbag. It's surprisingly cheaper than I expected, have done St Mark's Square and Basilica and the Doges Palace today, all breathtaking. Have also had hot chocolate to die for, more like thick dark sauce than anything. So far I'm loving Venice.
