I use TripAdvisor a lot (both asking and answering questions) and see very little dodgy activity.
If any answer on TripAdvisor looks dodgy it can be reported and once reviewed it may be removed.
I have reported a number of TripAdvisor answers that were blatant adverts (for taxi companies usually) and they have always always been removed.
You can usually tell any "dodgy" answer on TripAdvisor by looking at how much other activity the person has done on the site (easy to see next to a persons name).
If a first time poster says "I used the ABC taxi company and they were great" it will probably be dodgy.
If a person who has done 30 reviews and given 150 forum answers says the same thing then you can assume it is genuine.

I too am like Guilbert53 and find TripAdvisor a good source of information. There is some duff info on there as there will be with all sites including this one but if you go to the hotel you are wanting to stay at and look at the many reviews it gives you a fair idea of what to expect. Then you can go to the hotels own website and check on there also.
I have never used the hotel either, but a couple of years ago I viewed a few 3 star hotels in Paphos and I would certainly never have chosen to stay in any of them. Looking at the location map I would say you would be very close to a lot of the Bars and nightclubs.
Go every year to stay with friends, only stayed in a hotel once when going for a wedding and could not fault the Alexander The Great.

don't ignore Tripadvisor completely, Jordyboy. As ummmm says, take the very best and very worst reviews with a grain of salt, but reading through the rest ought to provide some reliable advice. Also, they often include useful local advice - things to do, good places to eat, how to get around, taxi companies etc.
Sorry, I can't help you with the specific hotel.

DSJ, I think it's only the poster who says they don't trust TripAdvisor. I like yourself often post on there and give advice as well as ask for it. Over the years I have come to never trust a travel agents description of hotels and their locations and always check with others including TripAdvisor first before booking.

i used to really trust trip advisor, but lately its been ambushed by hotel owners, i think. A recent stay in a hostal in Marbella was a clear example of somebody not telling the truth. my other 1/2 booked it, i didnt bother checking because she said the reviews made it out to be terrific. quite the contrary. when entering the hostal, it felt like lilliput, having to duck my head several times, i'm 5' 11". our room was on the 1st floor, what a surprise when we entered, bunk beds, no ladder. claustrophobic was my first impression. where was the bathroom, outside the room across the hallway in a private room which needed a key, that was also tiny, the shower cubicle had a shampoo dispenser, but it was empty. the loo didnt flush during the night. to put salt in the wound, we were promised cakes with our coffee on the roof terrace, there wasn't any. when i asked the owner his pathetic excuse was oh we used to provide cakes, but we were forever throwing them away. in future i'll take tripadvisor with a pinch of salt.
